What is a National Research Programme (NRP)?

A National Research Programme (NRP) is a programme for carrying out research projects that help solve important current problems. The Swiss Federal Council determines the issues and focal areas to be addressed by each NRP. The Swiss National Science Foundation is responsible for implementing all NRPs.

An NRP aims to coordinate research projects from various disciplines and institutions and to focus these on a shared objective. These projects must have the following characteristics:

  • their scientific research must be of national importance for Switzerland;
  • they must involve research which is neither industrial nor for the administration;
  • NRPs are expected to produce research findings of practical relevance to both government offices and public administration within a period of about five years.
