Religious difference as a problem in political discourse
| This project investigates the response to, and significance of the semantics by which Muslims and Jews are defined as different and excluded by the Swiss media and in Switzerland’s parliamentary arena (the semantics of difference). What is the role of religious communities in plebiscites?
| Religious communities frequently have a powerful influence on debates about social and ethical issues. This project examines the results of selected plebiscites in order to study the ways in which religious communities bring their convictions to bear in political discourse and how they themselves change in the course of such debates. |

Controversies concerning visible symbols of religious identity
| Using topical examples such as the headscarf debate and the minaret controversy, this project will examine how visible symbols of religious identity influence perceptions of cultural difference and foreignness in a pluralistic society, the various ways in which these same symbols are judged, and how they can become the subject of public controversy. |

Protecting religious minorities in a direct democracy
| Does direct democracy offer special protection for religious minorities or does it lead to greater discrimination? Which social, political and institutional factors favour protection and which ones foster discrimination? These questions will be examined on the basis of case studies and comparative analyses of plebiscites at all political levels. |
